Similar to any niche there are specific terms and vocabulary that are used that may be confusing at first in the Web3 world. On this page you can find the most commonly used terms in Web3.

APE-in

The practice of buying NFTs or crypto quickly without doing any research of the product.  

AssET

Typically used in the world of finance, an asset is an NFT or crypto that holds value.

AIRDROP

Similar to the Apple Airdrop feature, Airdrop is the transfer of NFTs or Cryptocurrency for free to a different wallet address. 

Altcoin

Short for alternative coins, altcoins, are coins that are not Bitcoin, such as Ethereum and Dogecoin.

Blockchain

An open source that is available to everyone and contains a record of all transactions in a digital space.

Bridge

Bridges are services that transport cryptocurrencies across blockchains for a fee. 

BTD

Acronym for “buy the dips” refers to the purchasing of assets such as NFTs/Crypto at a low price, in hopes for it to rise. 

Burning

The process of destroying an NFT by sending it to a contract address makes it untransmittable. 

Burst

NFTs that are deemed valuable and should be bought.

Bitcoin

The first-ever cryptocurrency was created in 2008 by Satoshi Nakamoto.

Collectible

Something that has value because it  is rare and is in demand, NFTs can become collectables. 

Cryptocurrency

 Cryptocurrency’s are digital currencies that use cryptography to secure transactions.

DEX

Short for decentralized exchanges, DEXs allow peer-to-peer transactions without the use of a thrid party. 

Delist

Canceling the listing of an NFT sale on a marketplace such as OpenSea. 

DEFi

Short for decentralized finance, DeFi’s are platforms and services that provide a blockchain that allows 1:1 transactions.

Discord

A very popular social media platform that houses many NFT/Crypto projects.

Degen

Short for degenerate, and is referred to as people who make risky investments without doing research.

ETH

Short for Ethereum, a cryptocurrency and blockchain that stores majority of NFTs.

Exchange

Platforms that allow users to trade crypto assets, such as Binance. 

Farm

Also considered mining farms, farms are a collection of GPUs that mine cryptocurrencies for a profit.

Fiat

The name for conventional currencies like Euro and USD .

Flipping

The process of buying a product at a low price such as an NFT and selling it at a higher price, making a profit. 

Floor price

The lowest price that a an NFT has been listed at, typically a good entry point for newcomers.

Floor sweeping 

The practice of constantly buying NFTs/Crypto at their floor price.

FT (Fungible Tokens)

Interchangeable and tradable tokens, such as common cryptocurrencies (BTC and ETH).

FUD

Short for “Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt”, and is a feeling that arises when a Crytpo/NFT loses value. People tend to sell their assets when FUD arises. 

Gas

Gas is the fuel/fee required when trying to perform crypto transactions on the blockchain. Gas is usually paid in ETH.

GPU

Short for graphic processing unit and is the computer part responsible for graphic rendering. 

Hashrate

The rate at which a mining GPU mines a token.

HODL

Short for “Hold on for dear life” and is referred to as holding an asset for a long time regardless of its price. 

ICO

Stands for Initial coin offering and is the price at which companies sell digital assets to their loyal and early adopters.

IYKYK

Stands for “If you know, you know” and is the saying used when only a portion of the people will understand the true meaning of something. 

McDonald’s


Is a common joke said by investors as a back up career plan if investing dosent go so well for them. 

Metaspace

Is the real world that is physical as opposed to any digital ones. 

Metaverse

A hypothetical iteration of the universe to an online digital/virtual world that is run by virtual and augmented reality headsets.

Miner

Someone who uses a GPU to mine crypto on a blockchain.

Mining

A process taken out by a GPU, that solves cryptographic problems on a blockchain and in return receives newly minted tokens as a reward. 

Mint/Minting

The creation of an asset on the blockchain. 

Minting Interval

The frequency/quantity at which an asset can be minted on a blockchain. The minting interval is determined by the marketplace that owns the blockchain. 

Moon

The phrase “to the moon” is often said  when the price of an NFT/Coin spikes up, and goes to the moon. 

NFA

Short for “Nonfinancial advise” and is a disclaimer used by those who give their thoughts on NFT/Crypto. 

Noob

A person who is new to the Web3 world, and is unfamiliar with its features.

Nuclear NFTs


Rare NFT collections where all owners of the collection are required to give permission for the transfer of one NFT from one wallet to another.

OS

Stands for OpenSea, the most popular NFT markeetplace.

Paper Hands 

Someone who easily sells off their assets because they panic is referred to as someone with paper hands. 

P2P

Short for “Peer to Peer” and is the process of two individuals performing a transaction without the need of a third party. 

PFP

Short for “Profile picture” and in the web3 world many people show off their NFTs by setting them as their PFP.

Rarities

The level of rarity assigned to NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain. 

Rug Pull

A common scam in which a person/team behind a crypto/NFT abandons the project, taking all the investors money. 

Rekt

Short for “wrecked” and is referred to as someone who has undergone severe financial loss due to a bad investment.  

Satoshi

The smallest unit of bitcoin worth 0.00000001 BTC.

Secondary Market

NFT marketplaces such as OpenSea.

Stacking

The process of hoarding tokens in a wallet for a reward, the more tokens you stack the more chances you are to earn a reward. 

SOL

The cryptocurrency that runs on the Solana blockchain. Solana’s blockchain is known for having fast transactions and lower gas fees.
